We moved to the East Village because we wanted to continue renting in a location where we could get some more space, but where Drew could still walk to work. I didn't realize we were half a block to the alphabet city NYCHA housing projects until after we moved in. And then I read about the history of Loisaida. It's a great neighborhood. And despite the booming LES nightlife, it is a lot quieter and more pleasant than dealing with both Bleecker St and the blocks around the W4th St subway station (crazy queer thugs, where did you come from??). There are more families and a much more natural age range to the residents here out east.
But, of course there is a sense of culture-clash. I'm always on the fence between being excited to have some fun, average kids living nearby, and feeling self-conscious about those kids' parents being aware of their rents sky-rocketing when people like us move in. I know that money will make the neighborhood nicer, but I certainly don't want my rent to be any higher. And I guess the lower-income residents are safe, for now, in city housing. I figure the most I can do is be friendly, let the kids pet the dog, and just hope that our new neighbors don't hate me.
But as friendly and open-hearted as I want to be, I still think it's funny that Nico likes to poop on Avenue D.
